Client Challenge
Sydney faced an urgent need to transform its rail network to address growing population demands, worsening congestion, and the need for a modern transport system to support economic growth. Key challenges included:
Capacity Constraints: The existing rail network was operating near its limits, particularly on key lines during peak hours. Trains were operating at full capacity, with 20 trains scheduled per peak hour but often only 17 arriving, leading to overcrowding
Reliability Issues: Ageing infrastructure and complex operations were causing delays and reduced service reliability.
Future Growth Needs: Projections showed Sydney’s population would grow significantly, requiring a rail system capable of supporting a larger, more connected city.
Integration Challenges: Ensuring seamless connections with other modes of transport and future-proofing the network for expansion and innovation.
Our Services
The Sydney’s Rail Future strategy was developed to address these challenges through a comprehensive, forward-thinking strategy. Vivendi Consulting project managed the initiative, facilitated key decision-making and stakeholder workshops, provided sophisticated modelling and analysis, delivered senior-level stakeholder engagement and wrote key sections of the final strategy.
The SRF long-term strategy laid the foundation for the largest investment in Australian infrastructure history, underpinning Sydney Metro.
Outcomes
The Sydney’s Rail Future enabled delivery of Sydney Metro, Australia's largest public transport project, which is transforming how Sydneysiders travel. Key outcomes include:
Increased capacity for millions of additional journeys each year.
Improved reliability and customer experience through modern, automated systems.
A scalable and future-proof network ready to support Sydney’s growth.
By combining innovative thinking with rigorous planning, the project continues to serve as a benchmark for large-scale transport strategies in Australia.
